Our Newest
Litter Has Arrived
July 15 , 2008 - On June 28th,
our newest litter arrived with Sidney delivering 6 male and
4 female puppies. She and the puppies are all doing well and
we have just added pictures of the puppies to the Photo
Gallery of the website (please see Gallery 6).
All puppies are very clean
and healthy, and while we have received deposits on some of
the dogs we do have a few left for purchase. With over 30 years
of breeding experience, we are certain that these dogs will
uphold our outstanding reputation for breeding large, healthy
dogs with gentle temperaments. Please visit the Testimonials page
to see what other Sheppards Chesapeakes customers have said
about their dogs, and please contact
us if you are also interested
in owning one of these fine dogs.
Our
Heartfelt Condolences
Luke
was the first dog bred by Sheppard's Chesapeakes that met
my standard of the original Chesapeake Bay Retriever. As
the dog incorporated in our company logo, he truly became
the Sheppard's Chesapeakes "poster boy", as his
owner Mark Adams would say.
Luke
was put to rest on May 7, 2006. All of us at Sheppard's Chesapeakes
are greatly saddened by his passing, and we extend our heartfelt
sympathies to Mark Adams and his family. This wonderful dog
has helped create a friendship that I truly cherish with
Mark and his family, and he will be deeply missed.

Story
by Kat Bennett for Bay Weekly, the independent weekly newspaper
of the Annapolis capital region: www.bayweekly.com
I
have been attached to the Chesapeake Bay Retriever breed since
1977. My first experience with this fine retriever was on a
goose hunt with my friend who invited another friend of his
to hunt with us. They debated on whose dog should accompany
us on this hunt, the classic Lab or the rugged Chesapeake Bay
Retriever. We decided to take both and the five of us ended
up in the blind with little room to spare. The meadow was pretty
much frozen over and if we were lucky the temperature was 5
degrees. Each dog made a couple of marked retrieves that were
around 30 yards. The action increased and the weather got worse
or better in our eyes as the flocks came over and started to
set. Many downed birds later, the Lab became very reluctant
to get into the water as the ice started to build up on the
dogs. With two birds down and not retrieved, the icicle covered
Chessie was given a mark on one of the downed birds. Without
any hesitation, the dog took off breaking ice and made the
retrieve. A second mark was given the Chessie repeated the
performance. That did it for me - I decided that it was time
to purchase one of these fine dogs.
This
is where my journey began. In the thirty years since then,
I have invested a great deal of time and energy into researching
this great breed. I theorized that if these wonderful dogs
could be bred with an improved temperament, they would not
only make the ideal hunting dog but also the perfect family
pet. My journey has involved countless hours of researching
and then testing my theories, and then researching and testing
more until I could develop the best bloodline that I could.
Through out this journey I have met some special people - Frank
Mitchell, a great trainer of dogs and people...Patsy Barber,
the walking bible on the breed and a great friend…and
Jeremy Mercer, who has field-tested my investment and given
me glowing marks on the results. All of these individuals are
outstanding at what they do, and all have made major contributions
to both the high quality of the dogs that we breed and to our
overall success. I have been truly blessed throughout this
journey.
So
where has this journey led? I am committed to this day to breeding
my dogs to the highest standards. I breed large dogs, the way
they use to be according to the old timers. I guarantee their
hips, eyes, and temperament. I am not a puppy mill, I breed
only to improve or maintain my bloodlines. All my dogs are
sold with limited registrations and I pride myself at matching
pups with the right owners. Why not own one of these fine Chesapeake
Bay Retrievers and see where the journey takes you?
